Selly Oak Hospital


Birmingham will actually have two new hospitals. They will form the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust with its new Super Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston.

The services at Selly Oak Hospital are renowned for their trauma care and as a Royal Centre for Defence Medicine supporting the armed services and those injured whilst on military service.

The burns units at Selly Oak are amongst the best in the country. The mental health facilities are scheduled for completion in 2008 with the remainder of the £690 million project being ready by 2011.


At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, the bed capactiy of 1,213 will also be complemented by a new psychiatric facility at three locations on the campus, adding a further 137 beds and a 32 mental healthunit in Showell Lane.

The new hospitals will provide much better mental health services in South Birmingham and the new Super Hospital will be capable of treating 21% more patients and reducing current waiting times.

The hospital construction programme is the largest healthcare in the UK outside of London. The contractors are Consort Healthcare ( Birmingham ) Ltd and Balfour Beatty with finance from The Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC.
