Calthorpe Motor Company Ltd., 81 John Bright Street, Birmingham.
1904-1933. a company which started out as a bicycle maker operated by
George W Hands. The first car was a 10 hp four cylinder vehicle.
Unlike many other motorcycle manufacturers, Calthorpe was unable to secure the lucrative government contracts of the war years.
Motorcycle
production and vehicle production was hampered by Calthorpes high
prices. They never really made it into the mass production market place
although the build and quality of their machines gave them an enviable
reputation.
The firm was bankrupt in 1938. Very few Calthorpe cars have survived.
